Capture the problem before polishing the prompt
Speak freely into a scratch document: what outcome you want, why it matters, what has already been tried, which files or systems are involved, and what would count as done. Do not worry about perfect ordering during capture. Voice is valuable here because it preserves context people often omit while compressing a request into a few typed lines.
Stop before secrets, credentials, customer records, unpublished legal material, health information, or proprietary content. Local speech recognition affects the dictation step; the destination AI provider’s terms and controls govern what happens after submission.
Turn the transcript into a checkable brief
Arrange the draft into goal, context, constraints, inputs, required output, and verification. Name what must not change. Replace vague pronouns. Correct software names, versions, dates, file paths, numbers, and negations. If the request authorizes an external action—publishing, emailing, deleting, purchasing, or deploying—state its scope explicitly.
For complex work, ask the model to inspect existing source-of-truth files before making changes and to run the project’s checks. A long spoken prompt can still be concise once duplicate thoughts are removed.
Inspect high-impact words before submit
Recognition errors often remain grammatical. “Do deploy” and “don’t deploy” differ by one sound. A package version, account name, host, branch, or path can look plausible while pointing somewhere else. Read those portions visually and, for consequential actions, confirm the target independently.
Submit in a new conversation when old context could conflict. Keep the original brief so later changes are visible. Treat the model’s result as a draft or action report appropriate to the task, not as proof that an external state changed.
A speakable prompt outline
Try: “Goal… Context… The current source of truth is… Keep these behaviors unchanged… You may change… Do not change… Verify by… Deliver…” The labels make pauses useful and help a speech recognizer preserve the structure.
If the tool inserts punctuation commands as words, dictate plain sentences first and add the headings in the review pass. Precision at the handoff matters more than performing every formatting step by voice.
